The PhD in Physics is a full-time period of research which introduces or builds upon, research skills and specialist knowledge. Students are assigned to a research supervisor, a specialist in part or all of the student's chosen research field, and join a research group which might vary in size between a handful to many tens of individuals.
The group is interested in a range of theoretical problems with a phenomenological emphasis (that is, with relevance to current or future experiments). We have close contacts with the Cavendish experimental high energy physics group and with the more mathematical theory group in the Department of Applied Mathematics and.
The application process for undergraduates and graduates is different. For more information, please select the route appropriate to your interest.
The University of Manchester is regulated by the Office for Students (OfS). The OfS aims to help students succeed in Higher Education by ensuring they receive excellent information and guidance, get high quality education that prepares them for the future and by protecting their interests. More information can be found at the OfS website.
Graduate Studies and Research in Experimental Particle Physics and Particle Astrophysics for the D.Phil degree. The admissions cycle for entry in October 2020 is now open. Deadlines for applications are 24 January 2020 and 3 March 2020. Applicants wishing to apply for scholarships are encouraged to apply by the January deadline.
Students wishing to progress to PhD study in Physics or a related subject after passing the Masters degree should reapply for admission to a PhD through the University admissions website, taking the funding and application deadlines into consideration. After completing his secondary education at Highgate School, he attended King's College, Cambridge, earning his PhD in theoretical (high-energy) particle physics in 1971. After brief post-doc positions at SLAC and Caltech, he went to CERN and has held an indefinite contract there since 1978. He was awarded the Maxwell Medal and the Paul Dirac.

Physics with Particle Physics and Cosmology BSc. This Physics with Particle Physics and Cosmology BSc degree course draws on the expertise of Birmingham particle physicists and astronomers engaged in cutting-edge research at CERN and other international laboratories and observatories.
The Theoretical Particle Physics Group is active in major areas of particle theory, in particular collider and low-energy phenomenology, particle astrophysics and cosmology, and quantum gravity. If you're a prospective applicant, find out more about our current research and working on a PhD with us at Theoretical Particle Physics.
We offer postgraduate PhD research opportunities in a wide range of areas of physics and astronomy and have a large and thriving community of postgraduate research students, numbering around 80 at any one time. Research students are assigned a supervisor who has closely related interests, and with whom they agree on a programme of study and.
A PhD degree in the Theoretical Physics Group enables outstanding students to pursue fundamental research at the forefront of theoretical physics. The Group’s research interests are diverse but possible topics include string theory, M-theory, quantum gravity, foundations of quantum theory, thermal field theory, early universe cosmology and particle physics.
The Department of Physics and Astronomy at UCL has one of the broadest bases for research in Physics of any UK university. A UCL Physics PhD provides evidence of the type of problem-solving skills which are an ideal qualification for a further career in research or the wider job market.
